Release Frequency: Quarterly

Release Date: Monday of the last full work week of the month.

FONE*Data is an area code/prefix database in fixed-length (ASCII) format that contains all of the area codes and telephone number prefixes within the United States and Canada.

Included Databases Description
Telephone Database (FONE.DBF/.DAT) Contains Telephone Area code and Prefix data for U.S. and Canada. Update old or existing Area Codes with new Area codes scheduled to replace them and link to location infomation such as City, State, County, Time zone, and Latitude/Longitude coordinates.
County Name Database (CNTY.DBF/.DAT) Contains County level data. Use the FIPS code to link to the FONE.DAT file.
Metropolitan Statistical Area Database (MSA.DBF/.DAT) An MSA consists of one or more counties forming a large population nuleus with adjacent communities and a high degree of social and economic integration. MSAs are defined by the Office of Management and Budget. The MSA database (MSA.DAT) contains population data and the MSA Code field can be used to link to the FONE.DAT file.
Historical Database (HIST.DBF/DAT) The Historical Database (HIST.DAT) contains a list of old area code changes that have passed their permissive period settings and are no longer valid area code/prefix combinations. This file can be used to update older databases with area code information.
Local Access Transport Area Database (LATA.DBF/.DAT) The LATA Database (LATA.DAT) contains Local access Transport Area Information that indicates the predefined local toll call boundaries of geographic areas.This file can be used to update older databases with LATA information.
